My Top Trips for Travel

Over the years I have had the opportunity to travel (not as much as I want to but more than some folks) and I have learned a few things on my journeys that I thought some of you might find helpful.
Pack ahead of time. I can’t tell you how many times I have waited until the night before the trip, packed in a rush and forgotten something. One year it was underwear and another time a certain pair of shoes I wanted. You don’t have to pack weeks ahead but several days before your trip is a very good idea.
Make lists. When my children were small lists were essential and they are still a good idea. We had five children and I often said going on vacation with them all was like Moses trying to get the Israelites to the Promised Land. One of our children required breathing treatments and we never went any where without a nebulizer. Be prepared and make those lists! If it’s written on paper (and you don’t lose it) it can be a great reminder of what you should take with you.
Check your prescriptions before you go. If you take medication on a regular basis get those refills before you go. It’s less of a hassle than getting there and finding out you need something you don’t have.
Stop your mail. Have a friend watch your house or hire a house sitter. We have paid our nephews to house sit before and it worked out great! Leave lights on an automatic timer and for Pete’s sake don’t announce on Facebook you are leaving town for a week!
Make arrangements for pets way in advance. I say this because some places book up, especially around the holidays and you don’t want your pet to be unhappy while you are away! If they have a certain type of food they eat send it with them. One time we returned from a trip, picked up our dog and brought her home only to find the food she’d eaten did NOT agree with her.
Don’t pack too much. After years of hauling a small closet of stuff on vacations I have finally learned that I only need the basics. Now I pack lighter and smarter. One pair of black pants with a different top can last several days and most places have dry cleaning services or a washer and drier.
Realize you still may forget something and don’t panic. Unless you are camping in the wilderness (which is a whole different set of travel tips) you will be able to find a store that sells what you need.
Don’t over plan your vacations. I have friends that plan something for every hour of every day. They wear me out! Vacations are supposed to be relaxing. Go at a pace that suits you, not at the speed of light!
Take comfortable shoes. If your feet aren’t happy you won’t be either.
Take business cards no matter where you go. You never know when you might need them.
Turn the cell phone off for at least a few hours a day, longer if you can. You need to unwind and that means un-plug!
Have fun! Be spontaneous! Jump in the pool with your clothes on if you feel like it. We shall only pass this way one time. Be safe but be adventurous too!
