The Move to Jacksonville

Residence Story

Jacksonville, FL, USA

Actually I didn’t grow up in Georgia. I was born in Georgia, but I my father was a handy man farmer. He could plumb. He could saw. He was a carpenter, basic electrical work. He was tired of being a farmer, and he had just recently married my mother. I was like 2.5-3 years old. This was in the late 30s, early 40s. It was about the time the big war started, World War II. The naval bases in Jacksonville were really building, and my dad heard they were looking for carpenters and electricians and plumbers, and he was tired of being a farmer and tired of being poor. So, he went down, and sure enough, he was hired right away and making a lot more money than he was making plowing the fields. So he sent for my mother and me, and we moved to Jacksonville, and that’s where I grew up.
