Assemblies at Stetson

It was in 1957, maybe 1958. I was either a sophomore or a junior, and we used to have assemblies. First of all, we had a chap assembly which was required by everybody. We had a university Chaplin which usually preached, or we sometimes had a guest minister. It was typical church ceremony. It was sort of a, “Let’s talk about your faith. Who are you? Where are you going? Do you have the faith if you’re not involved in the church? Why aren’t you? and if you need to talk to anybody?” It was that sort of message. It never was a shove-it-down-your-throat kind of thing, and it was always very interesting. Of course, there were some students who really balked about it, especially if they weren’t Baptist or Methodist or Presbyterians, and very often you saw students studying and writing who looked up every once in a while to smile.
